No matter where we go, English is almost always around in some form. Sometimes it’s particularly useful — occasionally a menu will have English translations for each dish, for example — but more often it’s a translation of Chinese that doesn’t quite make sense. This is usually ‘useful’ only in the sense that it cracks us up.
I often take pictures of interesting English signs or translations, and thought it’d be fun to have somewhere to put them all. Some of these pictures are particularly funny, but others are simply confusing or intriguingly poetic. Sometimes it’s helpful (if you seek a laugh) to remember that whoever wrote the sign is really trying to communicate something important to any English-only speakers who pass by.
I’ve tried to write the words for signs that are hard to read. And I’m going to continue trying new ways to show pictures/create galleries until I find the perfect one or give up.
All-American
No mercy!
Poor pandas… or poor humans?!
Throw in some German, that’ll help
“Civilization honor Please don’t crowded”
I’m not even sure what this is trying to say…
“Always mind your manners” … = “please don’t step on the grass”?
“A Yogurt Cow” = the yogurt drink shop near campus
Pizza, now a “baked cheese rice dessert”? As a bonus, Fantastic Mr. Fox.
“The grasses are smiling at you, because you will bother to take a roundabout way for them.”
“Paper towels” *looks around* *notices the lack of paper towels* *takes picture*
First read as “marine danger” — on the side of a trashcan. Not sure the correction helps.
“The several more steps you make will reward you with the grasses remaining green and fragrant.”
Just none of you take the sign’s example
Croquet = “Gate Ball”
“Lactic Acid Bacteria Drink.” Does that mean milk? Should I need to know that much biology to choose my drink?
A “milky soda beverage”
“Russian Style Pure Taste Milk Ice Cream”
You had one job…
Ok…
Warning: You are being surceilled

Love the anthropomorphic grass and flowers! How were the raw meat flavored potato chips? That marketing would go down well in Ethiopia!
